Carbon Marketplace vs Power Exchange: Who Executes CCC Trades?

Under the CERC (Purchase and Sale of Carbon Credit Certificates) Regulations, 2026, Carbon Credit Certificates are traded exclusively on CERC-registered power exchanges: IEX, PXIL and HPX. No fourth venue and no OTC deal clears a compliance CCC trade unless CERC allows it.

So "marketplace" and "exchange" are two different jobs.

Five Questions to Ask Any Carbon Marketplace

1. Which exchange does my trade clear on? The answer must be IEX, PXIL or HPX.

2. Will you onboard me to the exchange and the Grid-India registry? You need both accounts before you can bid.

3. Is my monitoring data verifier-ready? No verified report, no issuance, nothing to sell. See the ACVA list.

4. How do you track my bids across exchanges? The Registry adds them all up.

5. Can you help me decide whether to sell, buy or bank? Banking rules are covered in our CCTS design explainer.

How the Registry Polices Every Sale Bid

Before each monthly session, Grid-India sums your sale bids across all exchanges and checks them against the CCCs in your account. After a trade, the exchange reports it, and the Registry debits the seller and credits the buyer.

| Rule | What It Means |

|---|---|

| No selling ahead | CCCs must be issued first |

| Splitting doesn't help | Hold 100, bid 60 + 50: the Registry sees 110 |

| Void bids count | Over-bidding marks you a defaulter |

| Three strikes | More than 3 defaults a quarter: 6-month trading bar |

As of 22 October 2026, the CERC floor and forbearance prices are not published and no compliance CCC trade has happened yet.

ICT is the layer before the exchange: we onboard you to IEX, PXIL or HPX and the Grid-India registry, keep one bid ledger, and support buying, selling or banking CCCs, with every trade executed on a licensed exchange.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can Carbon Credit Certificates be traded in India?
Only on CERC-registered power exchanges: IEX, PXIL and HPX, unless CERC specifically permits another mode.
Can a carbon marketplace execute CCC trades itself?
Not unless CERC permits another mode. Marketplaces help with discovery, data and onboarding, but compliance CCC trades clear on a licensed power exchange.
What happens if I bid more CCCs than I hold?
The bid is void and you are marked a defaulter. More than three defaults in a quarter bars you from trading CCCs for six months.
Can I sell CCCs before they are issued?
No. Certificates must be issued into your Grid-India registry account before you can place a sale bid.
How often will CCC trading sessions happen?
The CERC regulations provide for monthly sessions unless CERC decides otherwise. As of 22 October 2026 no compliance CCC trade has taken place.
How can ICT help me trade CCCs?
International Carbon Trade handles exchange and registry onboarding and supports buying, selling and banking CCCs. Contact contact@internationalcarbontrade.com or +91 90544 01707.
